1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling, the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ an excellent choice for people who want an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but don't mind having to empty their dust bin manually as it gets full.

Both robots are adept at removing surface dirt on carpets and hard floors, and they can easily move around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart map of your home to help the i3+ navigate and clean up efficiently. However unlike the i7+ and other top rated robots we test the i3+ does not have any obstacle-avoidance features and therefore it could get stuck on things such as power cords or socks, and it can have difficulty navigating across surface transitions, such as from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot suggests that you clean the area around the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or clutter it might encounter. It's also recommended to keep the dust bin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. When the i3+'s internal bin is full or the battery is empty it goes back to its docking station, automatically empties its trash into the station's dust bin and then resumes cleaning where it started. The battery's lifespan is around an hour-and-a-half of continuous usage. It takes 3 hours to fully charge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model of the flagship line from iRobot, and it is equipped with the most recent features. It is self-charging and self-navigating. But the most significant feature is the self-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for routine maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ is able to better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and it can control your robot via the app or voice.

The i7+ is faster and more agile in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from all surfaces, including carpeting. Its biggest advantage over the eufy, though the dust bin is self-emptying which eliminates a major source of maintenance and reduces recurring costs.

We were also amazed by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning routines, move itself around the room and sweep the area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. After being connected, to give voice commands to the i7+ for example "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an all-sports car in a sea of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans and buses. It's powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in most homes, yet it is also small enough to fit on a bookcase or coffee table.

The biggest issue with the V10 is its short run time. Its claims on the market that it can provide up to 60 minutes of run time are not true as CR's tests have shown. This is a typical and not a remarkable time for an electric cordless vacuum powered by batteries. That's still enough run time to get rid of the majority of a home that's average size, but not quite long enough to clean every spot (though an additional run-through often does the trick). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more mobile than previous Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is significantly better for carpet floors with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a basic robotic vacuum that's an excellent choice for those who don't have a lot of money to spend on an expensive robot. It's capable of sucking up most debris types and sizes during our tests, and often goes over the same areas several times to get a really thorough clean. Its flat front end helps it reach into corners and along the edges of walls which is a nice addition.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it isn't equipped with the ability to map that comes with more sophisticated models like our top selections such as the i3+ EVO and j7+ series. The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in all aspects, as it has fewer components that need regular cleaning, is fitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has lower costs for recurring maintenance, has more advanced automation capabilities and is better at maneuvering itself. It also has a larger dustbin and charges faster.

The sleek RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba 694. It also comes with physical boundaries strips that can be controlled with the voice assistant on your smartphone. It also feels better-built and has a stronger motor, and is able to perform better on floors that are bare and low-pile carpet, while providing a greater variety of features for automation.

In our testing, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and handled dog hair (on carpet) very well, picking up 86% of it. It was not as successful in avoiding taller objects like socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested, best self cleaning robot vacuum and this could be a deal breaker for certain shoppers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that can be accessed via the app, and you can also create a live stream from the robot's cleaning station.
